Infertility is a source of immense pain and trauma for couples, and their pain increases by many folds when they have been trying to conceive a baby for a long period of time without achieving the desired result. Surrogacy has the most sought after option for infertile couples, although the pain of not being able to give birth to a baby always remains in their hearts. Without giving birth to a baby a women cannot experience the joy that one receives from breastfeeding their babies. A mother also develops a close bond with the baby with the help of breastfeeding. But surprisingly there have been cases where without being the birth mother, women have breastfed the baby. Breastfeeding is good for the baby as it increases the degree of immunity in the child's body, besides developing a strong bond with the mother.
Breastfeeding is important for the baby especially during the first couple of months, after his birth. This is because of the fact that during this time, the child's body is more prone to diseases. During the initial phase of breastfeeding, the milk which is produced by the mother is known as colostrums, which is filled with elements which help in providing the body with immunity. Recent studies have proved the notion that babies who are not breastfed are more susceptible to diseases like pneumonia, etc when compared with the babies who were breastfed properly.
The development of brains in babies who are breastfed is also relatively faster than babies who are not breastfed. Ideally the baby should be breastfed for six months, in order to gain the much required immunity in his body. Cases where babies are born prematurely, breast milk is required for them as their digestive systems are not mature enough and breast milk can be easily digested by them. Coordination of hand and eye also increases when the baby is breastfed because of all the sucking that is involved in the process. It can sound strange but it is true that babies who are breastfed are also less prone to obesity. Sudden infant death syndrome is more prominent in babies who are not breastfed. And in surrogacy the intended mother gets a beautiful opportunity to build a new relationship with the baby through breastfeeding.
A case was reported in early 2001, where a woman was not able to naturally give birth to a baby because of the absence of uterus in her body. So finally she chose surrogacy as the way to have a baby. When the surrogate mother conceived the baby the intended mother told the doctors that she would like to breastfeed the baby. The doctors prescribed her a drug called metoclopramide, so that lactation can be induced. She started taking the drugs seven months before the birth of the baby and stopped it when there was only one week left for the baby's birth. Along with the drugs, nipple stimulation was also done.
With the help of a breast pump (electric) nipple stimulation was executed successfully. After the birth of the baby she was successfully able to breastfeed him. Although the quantity of milk produced in her body was not sufficient to meet the requirements of a new born baby, so in addition to the breast milk she also let the baby consume formula and kept on feeding the baby with the breast milk produced by her body, no matter how little it was. This course of action was continued by her for three months. Breast milk without a doubt lays the foundation of a healthy life for the baby. Off late a lot of drugs have been introduced with the help of which lactation can be induced in the body. Metoclopramide is a drug which induces the growth of pro lactin hormone in the body. Contraceptive pills when used with a drug named domperodone it acts as a catalyst for the process of lactation.
People, who are skeptical of using drugs, adopt the method of nipple stimulation, which is natural method. Breast pumps (electric) are available in the market which can be used by the intended mother while the surrogate becomes three months pregnant. Breast stimulation should be done many times a day. Breast stimulation helps to produce a hormone called oxytocin which is also popularly known as the love hormone. Basically the oxytocin hormone, is produced by the body when a person reaches orgasm, the flow of milk is also regulated in the mammary glands. When the baby is born, the intended mother should be in a stable position to breastfeed the baby. There are some intended mothers who execute the process of nipple stimulation after the baby is born. Nipple stimulation is done when the baby sucks their nipple. Although this can also be one way of nipple stimulation, but the quantity of milk produced by the breast pumps, is really less.
If a person is too apprehensive about using drugs or breast stimulation then, she they should revert their attention towards food items which are known for inducing lactation in the body. According to studies conducted on lactation, herbal tea and coconut milk are found to be the most effective food item which should be consumed for lactation. Intended mothers who want to breastfeed their babies should stay away from caffeine related products. And consumption of alcohol is also not permitted. Food products which contain vitamin A also should be included in the diet. Cantaloupe and carrots are known to have good quantity of vitamin A in them. Breast milk should consist of fatty acids and fats.
This type of milk can be produced when the intended mother consumes cod liver oil, eggs, etc. the saturated fats help the baby to develop a strong immune system. Consuming animal fats during the period of lactation is necessary as studies have shown that women who are vegetarian have babies (who are breastfed) who suffer from fatty acids deficiency. A doctor's advice should be taken be implementing any diet plan by the intended mother.
